FAQs

Q: What does a project management degree entail?
A: A project management degree teaches the processes and steps required to effectively plan and manage complex projects to successful completion. Topics covered in the degree may include:

  • Project planning: Goals and objectives of the project, roles and responsibilities of people involved in the project, and project scheduling and sequencing
  • Scope of the project: Deliverables, procurement of materials and resources, costs and budget, risks to be assessed and managed, tools and products needed, and benchmarks for completing the project
  • Management and leadership skills: Controlling for quality, leadership of all aspects of the project, standards to be maintained, accountability, and effective communication throughout the project
  • Technical tools, software, and analytics used for decision-making and for keeping the project on track for timely completion
  • Business relationship elements: Conflict resolution, negotiation, organizational culture, ethical leadership, and social responsibility

Q: Do you need a degree to become a project manager?
A: A degree is not always necessary. On-the-job experience and project management certificates might take the place of a formal degree program. More and more, though, project managers are earning a bachelor鈥檚 or master鈥檚 degree in project management as their pathway into a career as a project manager, with possibilities for advancement into higher management roles over time.

Q: What is the difference between a project management degree and a certification?
A: A project management degree, whether a bachelor鈥檚 or master鈥檚, will provide a broader, more comprehensive understanding of the field, as well as additional background and training in business and management. A degree program might also provide more options for specialization or customization of your learning to cover knowledge areas that you are most interested in pursuing. Overall, a degree is likely to have a longer-term impact on your career prospects, compared to a certification, especially as you gain more professional experience. However, a degree will require a longer time commitment and likely be more expensive than a certification.

A project management certification is more targeted toward specific practical skills and knowledge in the field, which can be effective in the short term to enhance your immediate career prospects.
